What is coaching – is it instruction by another name? Or a just another word for teaching? Well, it’s both of these things and a lot more too. But if you want to get technical, the International Coaching Federation defines coaching as:
“partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership”.
Some of you may feel that sounds pretty intense! So if it helps, maybe we can think about coaching as this:
helping someone learn and improve
Okay, how does that sound – a bit more real-world? If this is starting to make sense, ask yourself “What do I want to learn?”
Next, be honest about your current situation. What’s currently stopping you from achieving the goal – what do you need to learn or improve? How can that learning be achieved? What is your preferred way forward?
Finally, do you want to learn with others, on your own, or a bit of both? What’s likely to be the most productive, or the most enjoyable? After all, sea kayaking is what we do for fun, so let’s enjoy the learning, however you choose to do it!
