What’s it like?

This hard-chine sea kayak borrows a fair dollop of heritage and tradition from the ancient craft paddled by the Iniut people. It works really well for medium to heavy paddlers with well-developed skills who prefer a more traditional hull shape. The keyhole cockpit makes access straightforward, perfect for awkward landings when you might need to get in or out quickly. The low front and rear decks keep wind effect to a minimum – a real benefit in advanced conditions. It’s long and has quite a straight rocker line, making this sea kayak ideal for long distance, straight-line paddling.

It’s a great kayak for extended expeditions and is extremely stable when loaded. The carrying capacity is deceptively large, perhaps due to the box-like proportions and shape that makes packing kit a little easier. The pronounced chines and a vee-shaped hull deliver precision handling, and excellent sea-keeping abilities. This hull shape cushions the effects of agitated water and reduces paddler fatigue. Choose this sea kayak if you value good seaworthiness above everything else and want to cover long distances without fuss or bother.

My opinion?

It’s long, elegant and certainly fast, riding high and dry over very broken water. It’s surprisingly easy to turn if edged effectively and rolling in rough water is easy. It was my choice for a unsupported solo circumnavigation of Brittany, France. For 22 consecutive days I looked forward to getting afloat in that trustworthy kayak. It was perfect – fast, predictable, comfortable, stable in all conditions and able to carry everything with ease. I was able to push hard through the agitated waters and strong tidal currents with confidence. I’m a huge fan of this well-mannered and elegant sea kayak.

How the designer describes the Greenlander Pro

This expedition kayak is ideally suited for the medium sized paddler and the low volume helps the lighter kayaker control the kayak in windy conditions. The Greenlander Pro has evolved from the Greenlander but the hull is 2 inches (50 mm) longer and has a straighter rocker line. The stern has a traditional Inuit up turn. We believe the Inuit kayakers chose this design, as it would have been relatively easy to change the weather cocking characteristics of the kayak by changing the size of the upturned stern.
